Guidelines for gene and genome assembly nomenclature

Published in GENETICS, 2025

The authors propose standardized reference genome assembly naming conventions designed around FAIR practices and compatibility with primary genomic repositories. The guidelines address difficulties in identifying assemblies and linking them across datasets and resources.

Relevance to FAIR bioHeaders: This paper complements FAIR bioHeaders by addressing how assemblies are named, while FHR records the metadata and provenance needed to identify and reuse reference genome files.
